Last Sunday we spent part of our afternoon watching an interesting
documentary called "DIRT! The Movie" (http://www.dirtthemovie.org) at
the Bug Theatre (http://www.bugtheatre.org) in the Highlands. "Dirt!
The Movie takes you inside the wonders of the soil. It tells the story
of Earth's most valuable and underappreciated source of
fertility--from its miraculous beginning to its crippling
degradation." The film was a fundraiser for the GrowHaus - which is
an indoor farm, marketplace and educational center in Denver's
Elyria-Swansea neighborhood. Their goal is to provide healthy,
affordable food for the surrounding community and raise awareness
about issues of food justice and sustainability. Check out
http://www.thegrowhaus.com for more info on that amazing movement.
Libby even won the door prize -- a 120 gallon composter!!

Coincidentally, we had the chance Thursday night to take part in a
free class put on by both Denver Urban Gardens (http://www.dug.org)
and the Denver Public Library Byers Branch. The class taught us how
to construct our own small scale window garden out of recycled plastic
bottles. We managed to complete the project in just over an hour, and
are really excited to try our hand at growing some basil and other
herbs! If you want to read more about this type of project, there is
a great website at http://www.windowfarms.org.

Wish List
*Napkins
*dishsoap
*

Weekly Menu

Monday
-------------------
Corn Chowder
Tomato Soup
Apple & Lentil Salad
Tangy Cole Slaw
Pizza Margherita
Thai Peanut Chicken Pizza

Tuesday
------------------------
French Onion Soup
Ham & Black Bean Soup
Mixed Greens w/ Fruit
Couscous Salad
Mushroom & Artichoke Pizza
Pepperoni, Sausage, Black Olive Pizza

Wednesday -- HAPPY ST.
Thanks so much to the poker tournament committee and Laura Goldhamer for all the hard work they put into the wonderfully successful 2nd Ante Up! Poker tournament on Saturday night. Nearly 40 players and tons of people showed up to play poker and listen to fabulous music at the Mercury Cafe. There were so many musicians who shared their talents with us. It was a very successful event! Over $4000 was raised for SAME in a single night!! The money raised from fund raising events like this goes into our general operating budget and allows us to keep feeding people every single day. Thank you so much to all who were able to come out and participate!! It was great to have our good friend Erik here all the way from Chicago. It was a fun night! Thank you as well to all of our sponsors, prize donors & supporters. You can view photos of the fun and games here:

http://picasaweb.google.com/agerber78/SAMECafePokerTournament2010?feat=directlink

In addition to the tournament preparations on Friday, the cafe hosted an art opening for Colorado Arts of Recovery who are displaying a new art installation at the cafe. Colorado Arts of Recovery confronts stigma by helping artists and others living with severe mental
illnesses make emotional, social and economic connections in mainstream society. It is a statewide organization created by volunteers who believe people living with severe mental illnesses are valuable members of society, have unique personalities, talents and
abilities, and have the capacity to regain the relationships, interests and dreams they lost due to illness. You should stop in and
see the beautiful work that is being displayed at the cafe until April.

Earlier in the week, Libby's Aunt Anne and Uncle Bill were traveling through Colorado and stopped in for a few days. Aunt Anne was great
help at the cafe (like always!) while Brad got to have a couple of days skiing with Uncle Bill. Thanks for working so hard while on
vacation, Aunt Anne!

Wish List
--------------------------
Plastic 16 oz. tumbler drinking glasses

CAFE HOURS
Monday-Saturday: 11am-2pm
Closed Sundays & all federal holidays

Dinner by reservation - book groups, board meetings, birthday parties...

Weekly Menu

Monday
------------------
Corn Chowder
Zuppa Tuscana
Chop Salad
Apple, Blue Cheese Pecan Salad
Dates, prosciutto, goat cheese pizza
Mushroom garlic pizza

Tuesday
-------------------
Broccoli Cheddar Soup
Tomato Sausage Soup
Spinach & Strawberry Salad
Couscous w/ Fruit & Nuts
Hawaiian Pizza
Spinach & Feta Pizza

Wednesday
------------------------
Potato Bacon Soup
Pumpkin Soup
Orzo w/ Citrus & Red Onion Salad
Chinese Chicken Salad
Pepperoni, kalamata olives, & mushrooms
White Pizza

Thursday
--------------------------
Chicken, Chorizo and Tortilla Soup
Cauliflower Soup
Carrot Radish Salad
Kaleidoscope Salad
Mushroom Pizza with Pine Nuts
BBQ Chicken Pizza

Friday
--------------------------
Black Bean Soup
Creamy Garlic Soup
Portobello Mushroom Salad
Four Star Romaine Salad
Spinach Artichoke Pizza
Prosciutto & Sun-Dried Tomato Pizza

Saturday
--------------------------
Carrot Orange Soup
Chicken Noodle Soup
Cool Couscous
Greens with Veggies
Southwestern Veggie Pizza
Pepperoni Pizza
Most of you are probably aware by now that we were featured on the CBS
Evening News with Katie Couric last week. We have had an overwhelming
response from people all over the country. Phone calls, emails, donations
through our website, donations through the mail. It has been incredible.
The support we have received has made my cup overflow, as they say. I
wanted to share a couple of stories with you that have really touched me
this week.

The first is the short but sweet letter we received from a gentleman living
in NY. It reads: *To the SAME Cafe Please find enclosed a check for $25.00
You are doing something very good for people in our own country! The
dignity piece is amazing. p.s. I know, I've been there!*
*
*
The second: *Hey guys I truly wish I could donate much more, but times have
been pretty tough on my business lately. I'm a 54 yr. old man that was
brought to tears when I saw your story on TV. Trust me, if & when things get
back to normal, I WILL be sending more your way. The world needs more people
like you. THANK YOU for what you do & thank you even more, for being who you
are! LOVE...PEACE...HAPPINESS... *
*
*
The last story is one that just blew me away. I have been trying to
personally respond to every email that we have received and thank every
person for their contributions. When we get donations through PayPal, the
donor has the opportunity to include a short message with their donation.
Here is the one that just left me crying at the computer: * **Dear Brad &
Libby: I saw a report on CBS, with my 10 y.o. son tonight-- and he was so
moved by your "compassion" and "goodness" (his words) that he wanted to
donate $ 5.00 from his allowance this week. We got online, found your site--
and we thrilled there was a PayPal link. God Bless you for your good hearts.
We will send a little more as soon as we are able :o) *
*
*
Maybe it was the teacher in me that was so touched by this child's
generosity! Either way, this is just a taste of the goodness that we have
been showered with this past week. Thanks for being a part of such an
amazing place. We are so lucky to share in the goodness here!
We love having dinners available by reservation. On Saturday we had two separate groups who came in and had dinner with us. It was really fun! One group was a prom dinner. Some customers decided to stay and help clean up - even while dressed to impress!

Thank you so much to the United Methodist Woman's group who we talked to at St. Andrew's on Saturday morning. They brought donations of paper goods, cups, silverware, and plates. We filled the truck bed! It was amazing to be able to share our story with them and we thank them for the generous donations!

Don't forget about our next big event - the 2nd Annual SAME Cafe Ante-Up Charity Poker Tournament!
